Using testing data to drive increased performance and plan further testing efficiently.

This equipment supplier had been experiencing a strong increase in development costs of highly-complex products with a double-digit number of parameters. For a long time, the driving force of these costs had been the inescapably increasing cost of testing campaigns, as it was impossible to simulate the main physics of the system.

Therefore, subject-matter experts were using their expertise and engineering intuition to change a small number of parameters for each testing campaign. This represented an incremental improvement of the product, though often it was experienced as "two steps forward and one step back".

Investing resources in this manner was unsustainable. Something had to be done to prevent unnecessary testing, and maximize the insights from past testing campaigns, in order to understand the system better.
